Optimal Audio Settings for Every Music Genre

Pop, R&B, rap, trap, lo-fi, rock, techno, metal: each genre responds differently to slowing and reverb. This guide gives precise setting ranges per style, explains why they work, and shows how to adapt them to your own track.

Why no universal setting exists

Applying 0.90× and 15 % reverb to every track will give wildly uneven results. Three characteristics of the source file determine how it responds to processing, and they vary enormously from genre to genre.

Mix density. A metal track contains distorted guitars occupying the entire midrange at all times. Adding reverb to an already dense mix produces confusion. A piano ballad, with plenty of space between elements, accepts generous reverb instead.

Source tempo. Slowing a 75 BPM track by 12 % brings it to 66 BPM, a tempo that starts to drag. The same treatment on a 140 BPM track brings it to 123 BPM, still perfectly dynamic. The available headroom is not the same.

Spectral balance. A trap track is built around an 808 occupying the bottom of the spectrum. Slowing it pushes that fundamental down, sometimes into frequencies small speakers no longer reproduce. An acoustic track has no such problem.

Genre by genre

Pop

Modern pop is mixed with vocals well forward and heavy compression. Slowing exposes that compression's artefacts: you hear breath rising between phrases. Stay around 0.90× and compensate with moderate reverb that partly masks those flaws. If the track contains stacked backing vocals, your reverb adds to their own treatment — pull back a few points from your usual instinct.

R&B

This is the genre that responds best to Slowed + Reverb, and that is no accident: the lineage from chopped and screwed is direct. Base tempos are often already slow (70 to 100 BPM), mixes leave space, and melismatic vocal lines gain presence when stretched. You can push to 0.85× and 22 % reverb without the result becoming unreadable.

Rap and hip-hop

The critical point is lyric intelligibility. A fast flow slowed down becomes more legible, which is an advantage; but reverb that is too long drowns the consonants and cancels that gain. Stay under 15 % reverb. Bass boost, on the other hand, can be generous: rap productions handle low-end reinforcement well, and it often gives the result its character.

Trap

Special care here. A trap track's 808 typically sits between 40 and 60 Hz. Slowing by 10 % pushes it down to 36–54 Hz, a zone most phone speakers and entry-level earbuds simply do not reproduce. The track will then sound empty on those devices even if it sounds good in headphones. Stay above 0.90× and add only modest bass boost — the problem is not lack of level but the shift in frequency.

Lo-fi

Lo-fi is built for this kind of treatment. Mixes are deliberately blurred, bass is round, highs are already attenuated. You can apply extreme settings — 0.85× with 25 % reverb — and still get a coherent result. It is the ideal genre for experimenting and understanding what each parameter does.

Rock and metal

The hardest genres, for two reasons. First, cymbals: slowed down, they lose brightness and take on an unpleasant metallic colour, especially audible on hi-hats. Second, guitar distortion already occupies the entire midrange, so reverb has nowhere to sit and creates mush. Stay conservative: 0.92× to 0.96×, reverb under 10 %. On heavily compressed modern metal, the treatment often adds nothing good.

Electronic music

House, techno and electro work well, with one caveat: these genres rely on hypnotic rhythmic regularity. Slowing them too much breaks that trance. A 130 BPM techno track at 0.88× lands at 114 BPM, still danceable. The same at 0.80× lands at 104 BPM and loses its function. The kick also deserves attention: slowed, its attack softens and it loses impact.

Jazz and classical

Jazz poses a specific problem: swing rests on a duration ratio between eighth notes that gives the genre its character. Moderate slowing preserves it, but below 0.88× the sense of swing turns into mere slowness. Classical music is most often recorded in a reverberant space — hall, church — and therefore already carries its own reverb. Adding a second creates an unnatural stack. Stay under 14 % and work mainly on speed.

A method for finding the right setting

Rather than starting from numbers, work through listening stages.

  1. Speed first, with no effects at all. Find the point where the track keeps its intent while having changed character. This is the most structural setting; everything else adapts to it.
  2. Reverb next, raised gradually. Increase until lyrics start becoming hard to follow, then come back down 3 to 5 points. You are at the useful maximum.
  3. Bass boost last, in small increments. Listen specifically to chorus sections, where energy peaks. If you hear the low end "puffing" or saturating, back off.
  4. Check on a small speaker. A setting validated only in headphones almost always has too much bass. Listening on a phone speaker is the most revealing test, because that is how most people will hear the result.

Adjusting when in doubt

If the result lacks character, it is usually not reverb that needs raising but speed that needs lowering by a point or two. If the result is muddy, cut reverb before touching anything else. If the track sounds weak on a phone, the problem is almost always excess energy in the low frequencies rather than a lack of overall level.

In every case, compare against the original by alternating between the two. The ear adapts to a treatment very quickly and loses its judgment after a few minutes. Taking a ten-minute break before approving an export prevents a lot of unpleasant surprises.
